The Left is Worried…

The Left is Worried…

Dear Friend,

The left-wing Center for American Progress has a complaint: The work of your National Center for Public Policy Research is too “widely reprinted.”

Yes, they actually have that complaint!

We won’t say we sympathize with the whining of a group run by Bill Clinton’s White House chief-of-staff, but we admit: The left has reason to be concerned.

Thanks to our generous supporters, in 2009 the National Center for Public Policy Research earned over 6,000 media citations, interviews and published op-eds for the conservative, free-market message we share.

That includes over 600 op-eds in newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, Investor’s Business Daily, New York Post and other major papers, and repeatedly in over 20 black community publications as well…

…and continual appearances in the major broadcast media, including frequent bookings on the Fox News Channel powerhouses O’Reilly Factor, Glenn Beck and Hannity, and hundreds of talk radio stations.

In fact, our full-time Project 21 Fellow Deneen Borelli is on the Fox News Channel so often, they named her a “Contributor.”

But now we begin the most dangerous period of time for American liberty.

The big-government liberals see their political power slipping away.

They see with every slide in the polls that their numbers on Capitol Hill will be smaller next January.

They expect to lose — at minimum — their supermajority in the U.S. Senate.

The left fears it could lose control of the House of Representatives next year.

So for the left, the time to push their agenda is now…

…and for us, the time to alert the American people is now.

We need the continued help of dedicated supporters to keep the left on the ropes.

Would you consider sending a special year-end gift?

In 2009, working together with supporters and allies, we stopped the left — despite liberal control of the White House and both Houses of Congress — from achieving its two biggest goals: socialized medicine and cap-and-trade.

The left’s cap-and-trade push is in deep trouble, and we may yet prevail on health care.

Will you help us continue the fight?

All gifts to the National Center for Public Policy Research are tax-deductible, and there’s still time to earn a deduction for the 2009 tax year. You can donate conveniently online by credit card or PayPal by clicking here, or telephone us at (202) 543-4110 or fax us at (202) 543-5975 to donate by credit card. Or send us a contribution check dated by December 31, 2009.

Any support you send will be gratefully accepted and put to work for liberty right away.

With sincere appreciation for all you do,

Best regards,

Amy and David Ridenour

P.S. We wish you, and the United States of America, the very best in the coming year.

Health Care

without comments

As you know, Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page, $1.3 trillion government takeover of health care will radically increase government spending, raise taxes, destroy millions of jobs, cut Medicare for seniors, and make health care more expensive for every American.

By contrast, the GOP alternative will lower costs for families and small businesses, expand coverage, and promote healthy lifestyles.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says our bill will lower premiums by up to 10 percent and reduce the deficit by $68 billion – without raising taxes or adding to the debt. Here’s how:

> ENDING JUNK LAWSUITS: The GOP alternative rein in the junk lawsuits and limit the defensive medicine that drives up costs on everyone.

> COVERING AMERICANS WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. Under the GOP bill, all Americans, regardless of pre-existing conditions or past illness, will have access to affordable health care. By contrast with the Pelosi plan, the GOP bill achieves this goal in a ways that lowers health care premiums for American families rather than raising them.

> ALLOWING SMALL BUSINESSES TO POOL TOGETHER: The Republican bill will allow small businesses to band together and buy insurance at a lower cost, the same way large corporations and labor unions do.

> ENCOURAGING STATE INNOVATION: The Republican bill gives states the tools they need to lower health care costs and the number of residents without insurance.

> ALLOW AMERICANS TO BUY INSURANCE ACROSS STATE LINES: The GOP alternative let’s Americans buy health insurance across state lines and shop around for the coverage that best suits them.

>> READ ALL ABOUT THE GOP ALTERNATIVE BY CLICKING HERE < <

I know you’re as opposed to Speaker Pelosi’s health care takeover as I am, and that’s why I also want to invite you to a special, online webcast today starting at 1:00 p.m. to expose the costs and consequences of the Democrats’ reckless bill and discuss the GOP alternative.

>> CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE AND WATCH THE WEBCAST < <

The webcast will run for 12 hours so feel free to jump in at any time. Throughout the day, Republican lawmakers – including myself – will examine Pelosi’s bill, highlight the GOP alternative, and take questions from Americans via email, Twitter, and Facebook. I hope you can join us for this special event!

Sincerely,

THEIR Playbook

THEIR Playbook

Did you ever ask yourself, “WHAT in hell is he doing??“  This is one theory.

Keeping in mind that “progressives” (Marxists) want power.  Power over anything they can grab.  Also keeping in mind that Obama has shown himself to be a Marxist, his goal is, bluntly put, to collapse this country.  Why?  Once he has the country in chaos, hungry shell-shocked people will take whatever solution he offers (Cloward-Piven Strategy, page 5).

Using steps from Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, he’s plowing ahead.  You will recognize many of them, both in the “Rules” and methods in the “Crisis Strategy” that follows.

From Newsmax.com, Diane Alden, January 7, 2003:

Saul Alinsky died in 1972. He was a Marxist grassroots organizer who spent much of his life organizing rent strikes and protesting conditions of the poor in Chicago in the 1930s. However, unlike Christian socialist and activist for the poor Dorothy Day, Alinsky’s real claim to fame was as strategist for anti-establishment ’60s radicals and revolutionaries.

Indeed, Alinsky wrote the rule book for ’60s radicals like Bill and Hillary Clinton, George Miller and Nancy Pelosi. He considered Hillary Rodham to be one of his better students and asked her to join him in his efforts as an organizer of radical leftist causes. But Hillary had other fish to fry on her climb to national prominence.

“Rules for Radicals” begins with an unusual tribute: “From all our legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins – or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom – Lucifer.”

The devil challenged authority and got his own kingdom, and that goes to the heart of what left is really about. That of course is to get power any way you can, including lying, cheating and stealing. The ultimate rule is that the ends justify the means.

… Alinsky and his followers counted on the guilt and shame of the white middle class to get what they wanted. In order to take over institutions and get power, the middle class had to be convinced that they were somehow lucky winners in “life’s lottery.”

Alinsky’s radicals found a perfect vehicle for their destruction of the American system and more particularly for taking and maintaining power. That instrument was the Democratic Party.

Obama is proud to have learned and taught Alinsky’s methods for community organizing.

Originally published in 1971, Saul Alinsky wrote Rules for Radicals, a Practical Primer for Realistic RadicalsAlinsky’s rules, which he calls “power tactics”, are listed.  Notes on his rules are in italics.  Pay particular attention to rules 5, 8, 11 and 13:

RULE 1: “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.”

Power is derived from 2 main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.)

Sound familiar?  Did you realize, before the current administration how EVIL were the corporations that have fueled the jobs in this country?  How EVIL are wealthy people?

Obama is doing his best to divide this country solidly with the “haves” being humbled and their power (wealth) being taken “for the good of all”.  As he taxes us more and more, the number of “haves” grows smaller every day.  Don’t fool yourself; YOU are one of the “haves”!

RULE 2: “Never go outside the expertise of your people.”

When an action or tactic is outside the experience of the people, the result is confusion, fear and retreat.

Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone.  Organizations under attack wonder why radicals don’t address the “real” issues. This is why. They avoid things with which they have no knowledge.

You see an example of this taken and used against them accidentally in the “mobs” at the town hall meetings.  You notice that town hall meetings are being replaced by “one-on-one” events and “telephonic town halls”.  It is taking them from a situation outside their experience (angry people – especially conservatives – in large numbers) to a comfort zone.

RULE 3: “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”

Here you want to cause confusion, fear, and retreat.

This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.

RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

Historically, Republicans hold the moral and ethical high ground.  So tempt them and then absolutely hammer them with the results, whether the reported issue is true or not.

Remember Mark Foley, Republican homosexual Congressman in Florida?  He was accused of sending inappropriate emails to young male pages, and on the say-so of one young man, who led us to believe he was 16 at the time, was hounded out of Congress.  Foley’s a Republican and they are supposed to be moral, so he must go, right?  After all the hoopla and his resignation, it was found out that the page Mark Foley was exchanging emails with was 19 and over the age of consent.  This would be lauded if Mark Foley were a Democrat, but he was politically killed by lies, the Republican book of rules, and much help from the liberal media.

RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule.  Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.

In line with this rule, smirking media talking heads are calling the Tea Party attendees “Tea Baggers” to ridicule them.  “Tea bagging” is a homosexual act.

This is being used against them in the “Socialism” poster depicting Obama as the Joker.

RULE 6: “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”

They’ll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They’re doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones.  Radical activists, in this sense, are no different that any other human being. We all avoid “un-fun” activities, and but we revel at and enjoy the ones that work and bring results.

Conservatives, are by nature, well… conservative.  You see them out in force now because they have come to recognize that their whole way of life is at risk.  You don’t/won’t see them laying in the streets to block traffic or handcuffing themselves to fences, they don’t enjoy the attention like the largely immature liberal constituency seem to do (look up “useful idiots” for more on this).  We generally don’t like to make a scene, that’s why Obama should be paying VERY close attention to these Tea Parties.  We aren’t having fun, the fact that they are so well attended means he’s got one pissed-off population!

RULE 7: “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”

Don’t become old news.  Even radical activists get bored. So to keep them excited and involved, organizers are constantly coming up with new tactics.

Ever notice how a “traditional protest” has something of a party atmosphere?  Got to have fun!

RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose.”

Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)

Boy, are we seeing THIS one!  It’s something new every day!  We are fighting against them taking over our health care while they are working on food rules that need to be countered, cap and trade, and another (bigger) “stimulus” bill.

Recall Rahm Emanuel (White House Chief of Staff) saying, “Never let a good crisis go to waste!”

RULE 9: “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”

Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists’ minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)

RULE 10: “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign.”

This ties in with Rule 11.  He wants a violent outburst from … anyone… so he can do… something.  Martial law, perhaps?  Gun grab, perhaps?

RULE 11: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”

Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management’s wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)

THIS is what he’s trying to do with some of the push-push-push.  Union thugs beat up a man the other night.  They are pushing people around.  How long before someone defends themselves with a weapon?  THEN the union is the underdog.

RULE 12: “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”

Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem.  Activist organizations have an agenda, and their strategy is to hold a place at the table, to be given a forum to wield their power.

We MUST learn to use this one against them!

RULE 13: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

Remember how they demonized President Bush?  Remember Joe the Plumber?  Sarah Palin?  The CIA?  Targets picked and polarized.

They generally go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.  This is cruel, but very effective.  Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.

CLOWARD-PIVEN

 The “Crisis Strategy”

www.DiscoverTheNetwork.org

Strategy for forcing political change through orchestrated crisis

First proposed in 1966 and named after Columbia University sociologists Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, the “Cloward-Piven Strategy” seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.

Inspired by the August 1965 riots in the black district of Watts in Los Angeles (which erupted after police had used batons to subdue a black man suspected of drunk driving), Cloward and Piven published an article titled “The Weight of the Poor: A Strategy to End Poverty” in the May 2, 1966 issue of The Nation. Following its publication, The Nation sold an unprecedented 30,000 reprints. Activists were abuzz over the so-called “crisis strategy” or “Cloward-Piven Strategy,” as it came to be called. Many were eager to put it into effect.

In their 1966 article, Cloward and Piven charged that the ruling classes used welfare to weaken the poor; that by providing a social safety net, the rich doused the fires of rebellion. Poor people can advance only when “the rest of society is afraid of them,” Cloward told The New York Times on September 27, 1970. Rather than placating the poor with government hand-outs, wrote Cloward and Piven, activists should work to sabotage and destroy the welfare system; the collapse of the welfare state would ignite a political and financial crisis that would rock the nation; poor people would rise in revolt; only then would “the rest of society” accept their demands.

The key to sparking this rebellion would be to expose the inadequacy of the welfare state. Cloward-Piven’s early promoters cited radical organizer Saul Alinsky as their inspiration. “Make the enemy live up to their (sic) own book of rules,” Alinsky wrote in his 1972 book Rules for Radicals. When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judaeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system’s failure to “live up” to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist “rule book” with a socialist one.

The authors noted that the number of Americans subsisting on welfare — about 8 million, at the time — probably represented less than half the number who were technically eligible for full benefits. They proposed a “massive drive to recruit the poor onto the welfare rolls.”  Cloward and Piven calculated that persuading even a fraction of potential welfare recipients to demand their entitlements would bankrupt the system. The result, they predicted, would be “a profound financial and political crisis” that would unleash “powerful forces … for major economic reform at the national level.”

Their article called for “cadres of aggressive organizers” to use “demonstrations to create a climate of militancy.” Intimidated by threats of black violence, politicians would appeal to the federal government for help. Carefully orchestrated media campaigns, carried out by friendly, leftwing journalists, would float the idea of “a federal program of income redistribution,” in the form of a guaranteed living income for all — working and non-working people alike. Local officials would clutch at this idea like drowning men to a lifeline. They would apply pressure on Washington to implement it. With every major city erupting into chaos, Washington would have to act.

This was an example of what are commonly called Trojan Horse movements — mass movements whose outward purpose seems to be providing material help to the downtrodden, but whose real objective is to draft poor people into service as revolutionary foot soldiers; to mobilize poor people en masse to overwhelm government agencies with a flood of demands beyond the capacity of those agencies to meet. The flood of demands was calculated to break the budget, jam the bureaucratic gears into gridlock, and bring the system crashing down. Fear, turmoil, violence and economic collapse would accompany such a breakdown — providing perfect conditions for fostering radical change. That was the theory.

Cloward and Piven recruited a militant black organizer named George Wiley to lead their new movement. In the summer of 1967, Wiley founded the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO). His tactics closely followed the recommendations set out in Cloward and Piven’s article. His followers invaded welfare offices across the United States — often violently — bullying social workers and loudly demanding every penny to which the law “entitled” them. By 1969, NWRO claimed a dues-paying membership of 22,500 families, with 523 chapters across the nation.

Regarding Wiley’s tactics, The New York Times commented on September 27, 1970, “There have been sit-ins in legislative chambers, including a United States Senate committee hearing, mass demonstrations of several thousand welfare recipients, school boycotts, picket lines, mounted police, tear gas, arrests – and, on occasion, rock-throwing, smashed glass doors, overturned desks, scattered papers and ripped-out phones.  “These methods proved effective.  ”The flooding succeeded beyond Wiley’s wildest dreams,” writes Sol Stern in the City Journal.  “From 1965 to 1974, the number of single-parent households on welfare soared from 4.3 million to 10.8 million, despite mostly flush economic times. By the early 1970s, one person was on the welfare rolls in New York City for every two working in the city’s private economy.  “As a direct result of its massive welfare spending, New York City was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1975. The entire state of New York nearly went down with it. The Cloward-Piven strategy had proved its effectiveness.

The Cloward-Piven strategy depended on surprise. Once society recovered from the initial shock, the backlash began. New York’s welfare crisis horrified America, giving rise to a reform movement which culminated in “the end of welfare as we know it” — the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, which imposed time limits on federal welfare, along with strict eligibility and work requirements. Both Cloward and Piven attended the White House signing of the bill as guests of President Clinton.

Most Americans to this day have never heard of Cloward and Piven. But New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani attempted to expose them in the late 1990s. As his drive for welfare reform gained momentum, Giuliani accused the militant scholars by name, citing their 1966 manifesto as evidence that they had engaged in deliberate economic sabotage. “This wasn’t an accident,” Giuliani charged in a 1997 speech. “It wasn’t an atmospheric thing, it wasn’t supernatural. This is the result of policies and programs designed to have the maximum number of people get on welfare.”

Cloward and Piven never again revealed their intentions as candidly as they had in their 1966 article. Even so, their activism in subsequent years continued to rely on the tactic of overloading the system. When the public caught on to their welfare scheme, Cloward and Piven simply moved on, applying pressure to other sectors of the bureaucracy, wherever they detected weakness.

In 1982, partisans of the Cloward-Piven strategy founded a new “voting rights movement,” which purported to take up the unfinished work of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Like ACORN, the organization that spear-headed this campaign, the new “voting rights” movement was led by veterans of George Wiley’s welfare rights crusade. Its flagship organizations were Project Vote and Human SERVE, both founded in 1982. Project Vote is an ACORN front group, launched by former NWRO organizer and ACORN co-founder Zach Polett. Human SERVE was founded by Richard A. Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, along with a former NWRO organizer named Hulbert James.

All three of these organizations — ACORN, Project Vote and Human SERVE — set to work lobbying energetically for the so-called Motor-Voter law, which Bill Clinton ultimately signed in 1993. The Motor-Voter bill is largely responsible for swamping the voter rolls with “dead  wood” — invalid registrations signed in the name of deceased, ineligible or non-existent people — thus opening the door to the unprecedented  levels of voter fraud and “voter disenfranchisement” claims that followed in subsequent elections.

The new “voting rights” coalition combines mass voter registration drives — typically featuring high levels of fraud — with systematic intimidation of election officials in the form of frivolous lawsuits, unfounded charges of “racism” and “disenfranchisement,” and “direct action” (street protests, violent or otherwise). Just as they swamped America’s welfare offices in the 1960s, Cloward-Piven devotees now seek to overwhelm the nation’s understaffed and poorly policed electoral system. Their tactics set the stage for the Florida recount crisis of 2000, and have introduced a level of fear, tension and foreboding to U.S. elections heretofore encountered mainly in Third World countries.

Both the Living Wage and Voting Rights movements depend heavily on financial support from George Soros’s Open Society Institute and his “Shadow Party,” through whose support the Cloward-Piven strategy continues to provide a blueprint for some of the Left’s most ambitious campaigns.

Eyewitness Account of Union Thugs Beating Black Independent Tea Party Attendee

August 7, 2009
St. Louis, Missouri

I am Kenneth Gladney’s attorney. Kenneth was attacked on the evening of August 6, 2009 at Rep. Russ Carnahan’s town hall meeting in South St. Louis County. I was at the town hall meeting as well and witnessed the events leading up to the attack of Kenneth. Kenneth was approached by an SEIU representative as Kenneth was handing out “Don’t Tread on Me” flags to other conservatives. The SEIU representative demanded to know why a black man was handing out these flags. The SEIU member used a racial slur against Kenneth, then punched him in the face. Kenneth fell to the ground. Another SEIU member yelled racial epithets at Kenneth as he kicked him in the head and back. Kenneth was also brutally attacked by one other male SEIU member and an unidentified woman. The three men were clearly SEIU members, as they were wearing T-shirts with the SEIU logo.

Kenneth was beaten badly. One assailant fled on foot; three others were arrested. Kenneth was admitted to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center emergency room, where he was treated for his numerous injuries. Kenneth was merely expressing his freedom of speech by handing out the flags. In fact, he merely asked people as they exited the town hall meeting whether they would like a flag. He in no way provoked any argument or altercation, as evidenced by the fact that three assailants were arrested.

We hope that Kenneth fully recovers from his injuries; however, he is in great pain at this time. We will be pursuing legal action at our discretion. This was a truly senseless hate crime carried out by racist union thugs. Regretfully, Representative Carnahan’s statement this morning that implies Kenneth is to blame for being a disruptive force is wholly untrue and slanderous. We would like to think that an elected official in Representative Carnahan’s position would gather accurate information before carelessly rushing to judgment.

Kenneth supports conservative ideals, although he subscribes to no particular political party. We are calling on the SEIU, Representative Carnahan, and President Obama to condemn the racist actions of these union thugs. In the days to come, we will be investigating whether these thugs are working at the behest of Representative Carnahan and how strong their alliances to various organizations–such as ACORN–may be.

We hope the St. Louis Tea Party and tea party organizations around the country will protest Representative Carnahan’s offices and also protest SEIU offices in every major city across the U.S. These Democratic strong-arm tactics must end now.

Regards,
Attorney David B. Brown

Race-Baiting Tactics in Health Care Debate

Black Activists Call on Obama to Condemn Race-Baiting Tactics in Health Care Debate

Washington D.C. The Project 21 black leadership network is condemning New York Times liberal columnist Paul Krugman for scurrilously pinning racist motives on critics of President Obama’s health care proposals. The group is calling upon President Obama to condemn all efforts to derail legitimate public debate, specifically including this effort to stifle debate with race-baiting tactics.

“Paul Krugman is the one with race on the brain,” Project 21 Chairman Mychal Massie charged. “Specifically, he is using race in the lowest and most repulsive declinations. He is using it because every other argument to stem the growing tide of condemnation for the proposed health care reform bill has failed. Ergo, when all else fails, parade out the race card and attempt to incite blacks into becoming the useful idiots.”

“Opposition to the proposed health care bill isn’t based on race,” Massie added. “It is based on a people who are tired of Congress and the President spitting in their faces. It is the collective resolve of a people who are tired of being tread upon. One would think a Nobel prize-winner such as Krugman could figure that out.”

Krugman’s racial comments generated outrage from many Project 21 members, including:

Joe Hicks (Los Angeles, California):

“I must have somehow missed the articles from Krugman and other liberal and leftist members of the mainstream media that were critical of the activities of ACORN – the radical, leftist group Barack Obama once represented. Somehow, their heavy-handed activities – that many argue bent the boundaries of legality – were just considered to be the organized expression of disadvantaged communities.”

Now the same shameless, clueless writers are trying to convince us that those Americans who rightfully feel threatened by government-run health care and confront Obama’s noxious scheme at public forums are somehow the acts of a ‘mob.’ Krugman reveals his bias by admitting that people are genuinely angry without bringing himself to understand exactly why they are mad. Smearing the rightful anger and concern of everyday Americans as collections of angry, old white folks – or part of the ‘birthers’ movement – shows the elitist disdain that liberal journalists such as Krugman have for democracy in action.”

Joe Hicks is a Pajamas Television commentator and vice president of Community Advocates, Inc. of Los Angeles. He is a former executive director of the Los Angeles City Human Relations Commission and former executive director of the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Deneen Borelli (East Chester, New York):

“Krugman’s commentary shows he is as out of touch as many of our elected officials are with real Americans. What’s happening at town hall meetings has nothing to do with race and everything to do with concern over the rapid expansion of government.”

Americans are frustrated that letters, phone calls and e-mails to their elected representatives have had no impact on significant pieces of legislation such as cap-and-trade and stimulus spending. Americans are taking the next logical step by directly voicing their opinions to their representatives at town hall meetings.”

Deneen Borelli is a full-time fellow with Project 21. She serves on the board of Trustees of The Opportunity Charter School in Harlem, New York and previously served as Manager of Media Relations with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE).

Bishop Council Nedd II (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania):

“I have nothing to do with the ‘birther’ issue, but I do have concerns about health care. So do the people in my parishes and in the local diner where I eat every day. Living in central Pennsylvania, these truly are the people portrayed in the Norman Rockwell painting about freedom of speech that Krugman reference in his column. To imply these people are now racists is racist in itself.

Approximately half of the U.S. population didn’t vote for Obama in the first place. Why is Krugman shocked that there is opposition to the Obama health care plan, and that people dare to voice their concern at public meetings? The Obama plan inserts government officials into end-of-life decisions for seniors and those among us with the least. That is not a race issue, that is a privacy issue. The Obama plan has given a whole new meaning to the idea of government for the people. This health plan is a bitter pill shoved down people’s throat against their will.

Bob Parks (Athol, Massachusetts):

“Why is it when liberals want to make their points, their knee-jerk reaction is to go racial? Paul Krugman is supposedly a journalist. Before throwing out the race card while speculating, he should give us some attributed quotes. Minus that, what he thinks is irrelevant.”

Bob Parks is a Project 21 member and media commentator. He runs the Black and Right website.

Jimmie Hollis (Millville, New Jersey):

“I knew the moment Obama became a presidential candidate that anyone disagreeing with him would be called a racist, and that any opposition to his political views would be seen as racism. The left has always played the race card because it works.”

But I am nonetheless happy to see that people on the right and many in the middle are now beginning to speaking out firmly and with passion against policies they oppose. President Obama should speak out and condemn Paul Krugman racial commentary.”

Jimmie L. Hollis is a Project 21 member and is retired from the U.S. Air Force, in which he served from 1962-1987.

Geoffrey Moore (Chicago, Illinois):

“This is not about race. It is about government control. The system is not perfect, but there is no need to have the government take over control of the entire health care system. The government has not demonstrated the ability to efficiently control costs and provide good service.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who are not up in arms about their insurance. There are people who are somewhat pleased with the coverage they have. The government getting involved will create enormous expense and waste, while creating more problems than they intend to solve.”

Geoffrey Moore is a Project 21 member and marketing analyst in Chicago.

In his Times commentary, “The Town Hall Mob,” available at http://tw9.us/G2, Krugman wrote:

[T]he driving force behind the town hall mobs is probably the same cultural and racial anxiety that’s behind the “birther” movement, which denies Mr. Obama’s citizenship… And cynical political operators are exploiting that anxiety to further the economic interests of their backers.

Does this sound familiar? It should: it’s a strategy that has played a central role in American politics ever since Richard Nixon realized that he could advance Republican fortunes by appealing to the racial fears of working-class whites.

Many people hoped that last year’s election would mark the end of the “angry white voter” era in America. Indeed, voters who can be swayed by appeals to cultural and racial fear are a declining share of the electorate.

FRIDAY–Health Care Tea Party protests in Prescott, Scottsdale, Sierra Vista, and Tucson

without comments

The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity is joining the National Tea Party Protest Day this Friday (July 17) with protests at the local offices of key members of Arizona’s Congressional delegation.

The leftists in Congress are twisting arms right now, trying to complete the national government’s takeover of American health care. The same folks who have taken over private banks and the auto industry now want to take over even more of the health care sector. The same folks who make you wait in line at the Post Office want to create a system in which you will have to wait weeks, months, or even years for life-saving or life-improving medical services.

Some of the central planners in Washington want to give government the power to say which doctors you can go to, and which medical procedures you can and can’t have. President Obama is not sure whether the government should have allowed his own grandmother to get a hip replacement. Imagine how Washington bureaucrats will treat OUR grandmothers!

We must take a stand NOW to protect elderly patients, to maintain the high quality of health services in America, and to preserve the essential doctor-patient relationship. Government has already distorted US health insurance markets by making private health insurance too expensive for many Americans, and by making American workers dependent upon on employer-provided insurance. But if you think things are bad now, wait until government completes its takeover of the medical sector. We must STOP the relentless march of socialist medicine!

Here in Arizona, it appears that U.S. Reps. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Pima County), Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Prescott/Flagstaff) and Harry Mitchell (D-Scottsdale/Tempe) are not hell-bent on creating a single-payer, Canadian-style system of government-directed health care. But they are under intense pressure from President Obama and their hard-left colleagues in Congress. We need to give them some grassroots pressure in the direction of freedom!

In MARICOPA COUNTY, protesters will meet at the office of U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell, at 7201 East Camelback Road, Suite 335, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (on the SE corner of Scottsdale Road and Camelback) on Friday, July 17, from 9 to 10 a.m. Please bring protest signs and water. AFP Arizona will bring literature, as well as iced coffee and doughnuts. For more info about the Harry Mitchell event, contact Tom Jenney at tjenney@afphq.org.

In TUCSON, members of the Tucson Tea Party will protest outside of the office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, on the southwest corner of Swan and Pima, on Friday, July 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Tucson Tea Party org suggests that everyone wear red. For more info on the Tucson event, contact Trent Humphries at tucsonteaparty@yahoo.com.

In PRESCOTT, members of the Prescott Tea Party will gather at the office of U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, at 240 South Montezuma, beginning at noon on Friday, July 17. They will walk over to the office of Sen. John McCain, at 122 North Cortez Street. The Prescott Tea Party suggests that protesters wear hospital gowns, nurses, scrubs, and/or lab coats (or just wear blue). For more info on the Prescott event, contact Mona Patton at prescottteaparty@gmail.com.

In SIERRA VISTA, members of the 912 Project of Cochise County will gather at the Sierra Vista office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, at 77 Calle Portal, Suite B-160, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17. For more info on the Sierra Vista event, contact 912projectcochisecounty@gmail.com.

IMMEDIATE ACTION: If you haven’t already done so, please go to JoinPatientsFirst.com and sign our Hands Off My Healthcare petition: http://joinpatientsfirst.com/

Also: This week, be sure to check out a new TV ad from Patients United Now, entitled “Shona.” It will air on a number of national cable news outlets, including Fox News, CNN, Headline News, MSNBC, and others. Shona Holmes, the subject of the commercial, is a Canadian citizen who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Under the Canadian government-run health care system, Shona was told she would have to wait six months to see a specialist, but her condition needed immediate treatment. She and her husband mortgaged their home and came to the United States to get the care she needed, which saved her life. Unfortunately, her story is one of so many in Canada and Great Britain in which those who are sick are not getting the care they need. You can watch the TV commercial online at www.patientsunitednow.org.

Finally, be sure to visit www.azhealthcarefreedom.com for more information about the Arizona Health Care Freedom Act, coming to the statewide ballot in November 2010.

PAMELA GORMAN: The Tax Battle In Arizona — A Report From the Frontlines

without comments

By Pamela Gorman
Majority Whip, Arizona State Senate

Early in my career, a friend warned me about entering battle alongside a colleague, describing him as a “chocolate soldier.”  “Chocolate soldiers say all the right things and look formidable entering the battlefield,” he explained.  “Problem is that they melt in the heat.”  As we confront the nation’s largest budget deficit in Arizona, I understand what he meant.

Today, as we find ourselves in the worst economic downturn in state history, people are worried.  I’m worried too.  We’re faced with the reality that government has created a dependent class of people.

Conservatives who want to see government spending cut –- rather than taxes increased –- must do more than speak up, they must stand strong.

That growing class has become accustomed to receiving ever increasing amounts of taxpayer dollars, regardless of the taxpayers’ ability to pay.  The entitlement class is scared, motivated, and loud.  And, they have a lot of time on their hands while most of us are at work.

Like families across the state, government has to live within its means.  It should be simple for those of us who believe that government has grown too big and spends too much of other people’s money.  Still, it’s not easy to deliver the bad news to those who are dependent upon taxpayers.  It’s like telling Fat Albert he’s got to go on a diet.  No one wants to deliver the message, but deep down you know it might save Fat Albert’s life.  We are making difficult, but responsible choices – choices that honestly can some days break your heart.  But, that’s what we were elected to do.

Many of us have been very open about our conservative beliefs and we’ve made statements about them in public forums, on candidate questionnaires, in editorial board meetings and in our campaign brochures.  We campaigned on reducing the size of government and cutting taxes.  And we lamented the irresponsible expansion of government spending under Governor Janet Napolitano that has now come home to roost.  Many of us took it further.  We promised –- in writing –- to the people of Arizona that we would oppose any and all efforts to raise taxes.

Governor Jan Brewer, who succeeded Napolitano after she was appointed Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, made that same written anti-tax promise on June 10, 2006.  She promised the taxpayers and all the people of the state that she would “oppose any and all efforts to increase taxes.”  Yet, a few weeks after being exposed to “the heat” of our budget crisis, Governor Brewer was “melting” like so many chocolate soldiers before her. She threatened to veto any budget plan that didn’t include her $3 billion tax increase in her very first speech to the legislature.

A wise man once said that adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals it.  I believe that Governor Brewer is a person of character.  Unfortunately, she may be the victim of bad counsel.  Frankly, if I had advisers that would suggest I a) break my promise to the people, b) abandon my stellar record of supporting lower taxes, and 3) crush the already floundering economy with the largest tax increase in Arizona history, I’d find new advisers.

When government cuts taxes, jobs are created –- jobs that help the single mom go from unemployed to employed, jobs that help the working poor step up into the middle-class, and jobs that help the middle class start to save for retirement and their children’s education.  When taxes are increased, we see the opposite effect.  This effect is magnified during an economic downturn, so raising taxes now is simply dangerous and misguided.  And make no mistake, this tax increase is to be applied directly on Arizona working families and employers, who are the very producers that we need to pull us out of this economic malaise.

I am worried that the heat being applied by the entitlement class is melting the chocolate resolve of self-identified conservatives who are forgetting the interests of this struggling producer class.  The producer class voted for an army of conservative soldiers to keep taxes down, limit the size of government and protect their individual liberty.  They are counting on our conservative soldiers now, when the heat is on.  Conservatives who want to see government spending cut –- rather than taxes increased –- must do more than speak up, they must stand strong.  Now is no  time to discover we elected an army of chocolate soldiers!

Senator Pamela Gorman represents Arizona’s 6th district and is currently serving as Majority Whip.  Comments can be sent to pgorman@azleg.gov.

On Saturday, July 4th, be part of the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party rally in your community

without comments

The Tax Foundation says that because of unprecedented budget deficit over $1.5 trillion, it will take each individual until May 29 to pay their taxes this year.   On May 30th, you begin working for yourself instead of your government.  This is wrong!  Join others in your hometown and across the country by participating in the Tax Freedom Day  rally.  We suggest you have your meeting at noon in front of your city hall, but you will make the decision on where and when the rally will be.

Are you fed up with a Congress and a president who:

  • vote for a $500 billion tax bill without even reading it?
  • are spending trillions of borrowed dollars, leaving a debt our great-grandchildren will be paying?
  • consistently give special interest groups billions of dollars in earmarks to help get themselves re-elected?
  • want to take your wealth and redistribute it to others?
  • punish those who practice responsible financial behavior and reward those who do not?
  • admit to using the financial hurt of millions as an opportunity to push their political agenda?
  • run up trillions of dollars of debt and then sell that debt to countries such as China?
  • want government controlled health care?
  • want to take away the right to vote with a secret ballot in union elections?
  • refuse to stop the flow of millions of illegal immigrants into our country?
  • appoint a defender of child pornography to the Number 2 position in the Justice Department?
  • want to force doctors and other medical workers to perform abortions against their will?
  • want to impose a carbon tax on your electricity, gas and home heating fuels?
  • want to reduce your tax deductibility for charitable gifts?
  • take money from your family budget to pay for their federal budget?

If so, participate in the TEA party rally, the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party.

Bring your cell phone and call Congress and the president while attending the  TEA party rally (Representative and Senators, 202-224-3121; President, 202-456-1414). Tell Every American about this effort by forwarding this invitation to your friends.  Together we can make a difference.
