It is important for us to reach people with the facts as quickly as possible so please tell all of your friends to sign up for Jesse’s e-mail updates at this link, http://conta.cc/dbjvwp.

Gabrielle Giffords has become out of touch from her years in Washington. She does not like to face the voters and refuses to take questions from people she is suppose to represent.

This video shows how aloof and detached Giffords has become. She is more interested in her talking points than in your concerns. Watch video of how she handles people at this link or click on the image below. The voters deserve someone who will listen and that person is Jesse Kelly.

J.D. Hayworth Border Security Television Advertisement

New Television Ad Needs Support!
Spread the word…

For now, this ad is only running on our website and being distributed electronically to J.D. Hayworth supporters.

But J.D. needs your help to get this advertisement on a television station near you.  Can you please help J.D. out by making a $25, $50, $100, or more contribution to the campaign so we can put this spot and others like it on television.

The reality is – television ads are very expensive and our opponent is already spending millions on television and radio spots.  That’s why we urgently need whatever you can send.

Early voting starts in July with the Republican Primary on August 24th.  Time is running out to raise money to get J.D.’s consistent conservative message to the voters.

Please help today.  With your support, and with your vote, we can win this.

FRIDAY–Health Care Tea Party protests in Prescott, Scottsdale, Sierra Vista, and Tucson

with one comment

The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity is joining the National Tea Party Protest Day this Friday (July 17) with protests at the local offices of key members of Arizona’s Congressional delegation.

The leftists in Congress are twisting arms right now, trying to complete the national government’s takeover of American health care. The same folks who have taken over private banks and the auto industry now want to take over even more of the health care sector. The same folks who make you wait in line at the Post Office want to create a system in which you will have to wait weeks, months, or even years for life-saving or life-improving medical services.

Some of the central planners in Washington want to give government the power to say which doctors you can go to, and which medical procedures you can and can’t have. President Obama is not sure whether the government should have allowed his own grandmother to get a hip replacement. Imagine how Washington bureaucrats will treat OUR grandmothers!

We must take a stand NOW to protect elderly patients, to maintain the high quality of health services in America, and to preserve the essential doctor-patient relationship. Government has already distorted US health insurance markets by making private health insurance too expensive for many Americans, and by making American workers dependent upon on employer-provided insurance. But if you think things are bad now, wait until government completes its takeover of the medical sector. We must STOP the relentless march of socialist medicine!

Here in Arizona, it appears that U.S. Reps. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Pima County), Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Prescott/Flagstaff) and Harry Mitchell (D-Scottsdale/Tempe) are not hell-bent on creating a single-payer, Canadian-style system of government-directed health care. But they are under intense pressure from President Obama and their hard-left colleagues in Congress. We need to give them some grassroots pressure in the direction of freedom!

In MARICOPA COUNTY, protesters will meet at the office of U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell, at 7201 East Camelback Road, Suite 335, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (on the SE corner of Scottsdale Road and Camelback) on Friday, July 17, from 9 to 10 a.m. Please bring protest signs and water. AFP Arizona will bring literature, as well as iced coffee and doughnuts. For more info about the Harry Mitchell event, contact Tom Jenney at tjenney@afphq.org.

In TUCSON, members of the Tucson Tea Party will protest outside of the office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, on the southwest corner of Swan and Pima, on Friday, July 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Tucson Tea Party org suggests that everyone wear red. For more info on the Tucson event, contact Trent Humphries at tucsonteaparty@yahoo.com.

In PRESCOTT, members of the Prescott Tea Party will gather at the office of U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, at 240 South Montezuma, beginning at noon on Friday, July 17. They will walk over to the office of Sen. John McCain, at 122 North Cortez Street. The Prescott Tea Party suggests that protesters wear hospital gowns, nurses, scrubs, and/or lab coats (or just wear blue). For more info on the Prescott event, contact Mona Patton at prescottteaparty@gmail.com.

In SIERRA VISTA, members of the 912 Project of Cochise County will gather at the Sierra Vista office of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, at 77 Calle Portal, Suite B-160, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17. For more info on the Sierra Vista event, contact 912projectcochisecounty@gmail.com.

IMMEDIATE ACTION: If you haven’t already done so, please go to JoinPatientsFirst.com and sign our Hands Off My Healthcare petition: http://joinpatientsfirst.com/

Also: This week, be sure to check out a new TV ad from Patients United Now, entitled “Shona.” It will air on a number of national cable news outlets, including Fox News, CNN, Headline News, MSNBC, and others. Shona Holmes, the subject of the commercial, is a Canadian citizen who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Under the Canadian government-run health care system, Shona was told she would have to wait six months to see a specialist, but her condition needed immediate treatment. She and her husband mortgaged their home and came to the United States to get the care she needed, which saved her life. Unfortunately, her story is one of so many in Canada and Great Britain in which those who are sick are not getting the care they need. You can watch the TV commercial online at www.patientsunitednow.org.

Finally, be sure to visit www.azhealthcarefreedom.com for more information about the Arizona Health Care Freedom Act, coming to the statewide ballot in November 2010.

PAMELA GORMAN: The Tax Battle In Arizona — A Report From the Frontlines

without comments

By Pamela Gorman
Majority Whip, Arizona State Senate

Early in my career, a friend warned me about entering battle alongside a colleague, describing him as a “chocolate soldier.”  “Chocolate soldiers say all the right things and look formidable entering the battlefield,” he explained.  “Problem is that they melt in the heat.”  As we confront the nation’s largest budget deficit in Arizona, I understand what he meant.

Today, as we find ourselves in the worst economic downturn in state history, people are worried.  I’m worried too.  We’re faced with the reality that government has created a dependent class of people.

Conservatives who want to see government spending cut –- rather than taxes increased –- must do more than speak up, they must stand strong.

That growing class has become accustomed to receiving ever increasing amounts of taxpayer dollars, regardless of the taxpayers’ ability to pay.  The entitlement class is scared, motivated, and loud.  And, they have a lot of time on their hands while most of us are at work.

Like families across the state, government has to live within its means.  It should be simple for those of us who believe that government has grown too big and spends too much of other people’s money.  Still, it’s not easy to deliver the bad news to those who are dependent upon taxpayers.  It’s like telling Fat Albert he’s got to go on a diet.  No one wants to deliver the message, but deep down you know it might save Fat Albert’s life.  We are making difficult, but responsible choices – choices that honestly can some days break your heart.  But, that’s what we were elected to do.

Many of us have been very open about our conservative beliefs and we’ve made statements about them in public forums, on candidate questionnaires, in editorial board meetings and in our campaign brochures.  We campaigned on reducing the size of government and cutting taxes.  And we lamented the irresponsible expansion of government spending under Governor Janet Napolitano that has now come home to roost.  Many of us took it further.  We promised –- in writing –- to the people of Arizona that we would oppose any and all efforts to raise taxes.

Governor Jan Brewer, who succeeded Napolitano after she was appointed Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, made that same written anti-tax promise on June 10, 2006.  She promised the taxpayers and all the people of the state that she would “oppose any and all efforts to increase taxes.”  Yet, a few weeks after being exposed to “the heat” of our budget crisis, Governor Brewer was “melting” like so many chocolate soldiers before her. She threatened to veto any budget plan that didn’t include her $3 billion tax increase in her very first speech to the legislature.

A wise man once said that adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals it.  I believe that Governor Brewer is a person of character.  Unfortunately, she may be the victim of bad counsel.  Frankly, if I had advisers that would suggest I a) break my promise to the people, b) abandon my stellar record of supporting lower taxes, and 3) crush the already floundering economy with the largest tax increase in Arizona history, I’d find new advisers.

When government cuts taxes, jobs are created –- jobs that help the single mom go from unemployed to employed, jobs that help the working poor step up into the middle-class, and jobs that help the middle class start to save for retirement and their children’s education.  When taxes are increased, we see the opposite effect.  This effect is magnified during an economic downturn, so raising taxes now is simply dangerous and misguided.  And make no mistake, this tax increase is to be applied directly on Arizona working families and employers, who are the very producers that we need to pull us out of this economic malaise.

I am worried that the heat being applied by the entitlement class is melting the chocolate resolve of self-identified conservatives who are forgetting the interests of this struggling producer class.  The producer class voted for an army of conservative soldiers to keep taxes down, limit the size of government and protect their individual liberty.  They are counting on our conservative soldiers now, when the heat is on.  Conservatives who want to see government spending cut –- rather than taxes increased –- must do more than speak up, they must stand strong.  Now is no  time to discover we elected an army of chocolate soldiers!

AZ Taxpayer Tea Party Stirs Grassroots to Action

AFP Arizona reports an “outpouring of enthusiasm” among activists

PHOENIX – The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity (AFP Arizona) reported today that it has been inundated with emails, phone calls, and Facebook hits from new taxpayer activists statewide, in response to its call yesterday for an Arizona Taxpayer Tea Party, which will take place tomorrow (Friday, February 27), from noon to one at Tempe Beach Park.

“I have received rsvp emails from over a hundred new activists during the last 24 hours,” said AFP Arizona director Tom Jenney.  “And we continue to get a new crop every hour.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an outpouring of enthusiasm among taxpayer activists.”

AFP Arizona has joined allied pro-taxpayer organizations and thousands of taxpayer activists from around the country in the Tea Party campaign begun by the National Chicago Tea Party organization.  Many of the new Arizona activists were discovered through AFP’s national NoStimulus.com petition campaign, in which over 430,000 Americans signed up to protest the gigantic federal spending binge.

“The liberals in Washington went ahead and passed the Spendulus package,” Jenney said. “But American taxpayers are clearly mobilizing for the next round of fights.”

One of the speakers for tomorrow’s protest is state Senator Thayer Verschoor (R-Gilbert), who is working in the Arizona Legislature to rally a thin majority of fiscal conservatives against proposals to raise property taxes to fix the state’s gigantic budget deficit,  a deficit AFP Arizona blames on “reckless over-spending” during the Napolitano years.  There will also be an appearance from Wally the (Empty) Taxpayer Wallet, known for giving out an “Empty Wallet” award to the biggest spender in the state Legislature.

The meetup for the Tea Party is at 11:45 a.m. at the Tempe Beach Park, on the south side of the lake, west of the Mill Avenue Bridge.  A parking lot is available next to the park, on Rio Salado Parkway.  More information is available at www.aztaxpayers.org.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a nationwide organization of citizen leaders committed to advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity. AFP believes reducing the size and scope of government is the best safeguard to ensuring individual productivity and prosperity for all Americans. AFP educates and engages citizens in support of restraining state and federal government growth, and returning government to its constitutional limits. Response to Bailout by Tim Bee for Congress

without comments

“While I did not support this bill, I do believe that action is needed.

Measures like allowing U.S. companies to repatriate overseas capital without penalty and suspending the capital gains tax, rather than flooding the market with taxpayer money, are preferable ways to create liquidity.”

Press Release

Statement on today’s bail-out

When Congress had a chance to stand up and do the right things for the American people, they didn’t.  The proposed bail-out couldn’t pass earlier this week.  Ms. Giffords voted against it because she wanted “adequate taxpayer protections” and complained that the legislation was rushed.

Well, this new legislation epitomizes the systematic problems in Washington.

Instead of addressing the crisis and passing sensible legislation that would protect the taxpayer and not bail-out Wall Street on the backs of Main Street, a broken Washington saw an opportunity.

Washington (and the incumbent) seized an opportunity to pile on the American taxpayer.

They added pork for wooden arrows, racetracks, rum, bicyclists, and Hollywood studios to name a few.

Our Congresswoman Giffords wouldn’t stand by and say “no!” to the pork.  She added her own.  I support the extension of the solar tax credits.  These are tax credits that are important, but can pass on their own without bailing out Wall Street. Her vote to roll over taxpayers was bought with tax credits that a real leader would have passed months ago as part of an all of the above energy package.

This bill should be about protecting our taxpayer, stabilizing our markets and strengthening our economy.  It should not be about how much more pork barrel spending you can get away with.

Southern Arizonans deserve someone that will stand up for them and do the right things.

Tucson may charge fee on new home sales

without comments

By Rob O’Dell

Arizona Daily Star

September 28, 2008

Many new homes in Tucson could come with a 1 percent transfer fee assessed on their sale under a proposal now being pushed by City Council members.

The idea faces strong opposition from real estate and development interests, who are being rocked by one of the worst housing markets in decades due to the mortgage industry collapse. They say the fee would take money from either the home buyer or seller, making housing less affordable.

The new fee, recommended for approval by a council subcommittee on Sept. 15, would apply to any house or condominium unit where a builder has entered into a development agreement with the city.

Money from the fee — equal to $2,000 on a $200,000 home — would go to the city’s housing trust fund, used to pay for such things as home repairs and down-payment assistance for low-income residents.

The fee for the first sale from the developer to the original buyer would be one-half percent, but it would increase to a full 1 percent for any subsequent sale in perpetuity. It would be enforced through a deed restriction attached to the home.

Development agreements are contracts between the city and a developer to do things they otherwise wouldn’t do, beyond a standard rezoning.

The agreements often are used to collaborate on parking, for pre-annexation agreements, or when the city sells public land, City Attorney Mike Rankin said. Developers and the city also make agreements to share the cost of building roads or other infrastructure.

The push for the 1 percent transfer fee by Councilwomen Regina Romero and Karin Uhlich already threatened to derail one development, a proposal to convert apartments to condominiums Downtown.

Romero and Uhlich voted on Sept. 15 in the Children, Families and Seniors Subcommittee to recommend that the full council consider the fee, which could happen as soon as late October. Councilman Rodney Glassman, the third member of the panel, was absent.

Although the idea still hadn’t been presented to the full council, on Sept. 16 Romero proposed attaching a transfer fee to a development agreement with Ross Rulney for his Flats at Julian Drew project, converting apartments into 53 condominiums in a 91-year-old Downtown building.

Romero said she wanted to talk about a “voluntary” 1 percent transfer fee, but Rulney balked, saying he didn’t want to saddle his potential residents with the fee. With Mayor Bob Walkup absent and the City Council split on what to do, the decision was put off for a week.

Romero subsequently agreed to drop the issue for Rulney’s project, which was approved unanimously by the council last week.

Since then, Uhlich and Romero have dialed back their push for the transfer fee, saying it is one item on a “menu” of options that should be considered to help fund affordable housing in Tucson.

Romero said the idea was proposed by the board of the affordable-housing trust fund after developer Jerry Dixon, of the Gadsden Co., agreed to the 1 percent transfer fee in a recent development agreement for a mixed-use development on the West Side.

“We think it’s a good idea for the council as a whole to hear about it,” Romero said.

Uhlich said she will withhold judgment on the transfer fee until it is considered by the whole council, but she said it merits consideration, especially if the city is giving concessions or incentives in the development agreement.

“It has enough validity to be considered,” Uhlich said. “I support giving it serious consideration as another tool for developers to address affordable housing with their projects.”

The transfer fee will face opposition from the Tucson Association of Realtors, said Colin Zimmerman, its director of public affairs.

“Now is not the time to stick another tax on a market that’s already shaky,” Zimmerman said.

That opinion was backed by Downtown resident Mike Sepich, a counselor who is interested in buying one of the Julian Drew block condos priced in the low to mid-$100,000s. “It’s pretty ironic to have a fee like that on the only affordable housing that’s proposed Downtown,” he said.

Zimmerman said the Realtors already support Proposition 100 on November’s ballot, which would ban a fee or tax on the sale of property by the state, counties, cities and towns.

He acknowledged that the proposition would not forbid Tucson’s new rules because the fee would be part of a deed restriction that city officials contend to be voluntary, although Zimmerman added that it’s not voluntary if you can’t get your project approved without it.

Rankin agreed that the state proposition would not prohibit the city’s transfer fee.

Corky Poster, a housing trust fund board member, said the housing fund needs a dedicated funding source to supplement the money it now gets from condo conversions and other smaller sources.

Since being created in 2006, the city’s housing trust fund has taken in $650,000 and has committed $385,000 for homeowner repairs, down-payment assistance and employer-assisted housing, said Community Services Director Emily Nottingham.

The idea behind the fee was to recapture some of the public money that helps get a project off the ground, Poster said.

“It recognizes the city contribution,” he said. “Developers think it’s a good idea because it doesn’t interfere with their first sale.”

However, Richard Studwell, a local developer who opposes the fee, said Tucson doesn’t have a track record of spending tax money wisely, given its much-criticized Rio Nuevo Downtown redevelopment effort.

“The fund … will have high administrative expenses, and it won’t accomplish anything,” Studwell said. “These are well-meaning people who can’t get it done.”

Drilling Victory does NOT include Pelosi’s fake bill

without comments

19 September 2008

Dear Arizona Taxpayer,

Good news:  Our impending grassroots victory on lifting the offshore drilling ban has nothing to do with the passage of the Pelosi bill in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday. Just the opposite: our victory is due to the fact that the Pelosi bill is going nowhere, and the fact that the drilling ban is set to expire automatically on October 1st.

Bad news:  On Tuesday (Sept 16), by a vote of 236-189, a majority in the US House of Representatives, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, passed a bad bill (HR 6899) that made a false claim of allowing significant increases in offshore oil drilling. The bill would also have increased energy taxes.
